Engineer + MBA | 3 Years in Risk at Bank of America

Jatin Gola is an engineer-turned-management professional, currently working in the Operational Risk & Control team at Bank of America. Backed by an MBA and over three years of industry experience, he has carved a niche for himself in the risk domain, bringing analytical depth and structured thinking to his role in global banking operations.

His transition into financial risk was driven by a growing interest in the systems that safeguard institutions from uncertainty. This interest, combined with his real-world exposure, led him to pursue the FRM certification -- a decision that aligned perfectly with his long-term career goals and allowed him to strengthen his expertise with globally recognized credentials.

What early steps built your finance and risk foundation?

I joined Bank of America in a risk-focused role right after my MBA. My VP actually encouraged me to pursue FRM — he told me I had the right mindset for risk. That initial encouragement meant a lot. Then I saw a job posting from Mercedes-Benz Germany that required FRM certification, and that really solidified my decision. I knew this was the credential I needed to take my career to the next level.

Why did you choose QuintEdge for coaching?

What impressed me was how organized the entire curriculum was. The faculty — Yash, Sandesh, and Rohit — were all excellent. But beyond the teaching quality, the resources were comprehensive. There were 2,000+ practice questions, topic-wise tests, and full mocks, all available in one place. I did not need to go looking for external materials at all. Everything I needed was right there.

What preparation challenges did you face?

Time management was the hardest part, without question. I was balancing a full-time job at Bank of America with gym sessions and personal interests, and fitting in serious FRM study on top of all that required real discipline. But QuintEdge's structured approach helped me transform that resistance into consistent daily progress. Once I got into a rhythm, it became much more manageable.

What results did you achieve?

I cleared FRM Level 1 on my first attempt. After that, things moved quickly — I received recruitment interest from HSBC, Barclays, and PwC, with packages exceeding ₹22 LPA. The FRM certification combined with my hands-on experience at Bank of America made a real difference in how recruiters saw me.

What study strategy worked for you?

My approach was very structured:

  • 5 AM – 9 AM daily study sessions before work — this was non-negotiable.
  • Handwritten note-taking for better retention. Writing things out helped me internalise concepts much faster.
  • Lecture recordings during commutes — I made use of every spare moment.
  • Exclusive use of QuintEdge materials — I did not scatter my attention across multiple sources.
  • Targeting 80%+ scores on all practice tests before moving on.
  • 8–9 hour weekend study blocks dedicated to mocks and revision.
  • Consistent revision of handwritten notes throughout the preparation period.

What is your final advice for FRM candidates?

Be consistent from day one. Trust your faculty and the process, and do not skip chapters thinking they are unimportant. Every topic matters, and the discipline you build in preparation carries over into your professional life as well.
